#10 Discovering the Self

This day, see if you can identify the sources of your frustrations, and you may discover that in your physical life, some causes are from within yourself, whereas others originate from the outside world. If you cannot find a cause, it may be due to past lives exerting their influence by replaying their roles in your current life. If you are good at taking a close look and being very honest about what you find, it may seem odd that some of the human nature that you carry around is not ‘yours,’ and this advice to look deeply within may allow you to investigate within your thinking why you act a particular way in certain situations? The answer may astound you. It may take some time for you to become attuned to your inner communication clock.

For example, Warren has just realized that he gets too nervous sometimes when he is under pressure to maintain a tight schedule. He has requested our assistance in understanding why this is so often the case. His answer: even though he has only recognized this behavior over the past few years, it is due to lifetimes in which he was commanded to be almost perfect by overbearing parents or other authority figures, which then caused tension and suffering if that perfection was not achieved. To begin to extinguish this tension, we counsel that he should stop and catch his breath, allow his thoughts to step aside for a moment, and let that energy pass.

A more visual variation can also be helpful: imagine a symbol for the behavior you wish to change (Warren imagined a small, colorful, poisonous frog). We suggested that he picture this imaginary frog, and while visualizing it in his mind’s eye, label it as the behavior that he wished to remove from his emotional responses.

We advised him that the next time uncomfortable behavior arises, he should suddenly stop for a moment, and allow the frog to simply hop away. This can work with whatever symbol is personally meaningful to you. With repetition over time, the unwanted behavior should dissipate.

This simple exercise is for you to learn a skill in removing unnecessary habits while exercising your imaginative capabilities.
